Mundo #15 - Recession Politics Visualised

Updated: Dec 8, 2020

G'day, and welcome to the fifteenth edition of Mundo.

This week I explore the depths and disparities of a United States in deep recession using two visualisations. How will this play into the presidential election this coming November?

Surging unemployment in close-to-call "battleground states" and climbing coronavirus cases is an enormous electoral threat to a president who boasts of his administration's economic success. The quickly assembled federal "Paycheck Protection Program" seems to have prevented many small businesses from going bankrupt as lockdowns spread throughout the country. However short of further stimulus, the PPP may only be delaying the death of many of these small businesses, as fears of a second wave and a return to lockdowns hangs heavily in the summer air. America's economic recovery - particularly in those battleground states - will be a crucial factor to watch as November approaches.

Maximise the screen using the button on the bottom right.  The dashboard has two tabs, which you can navigate between at the top of your screen.  You can hover over and click into any of the data points for further detail. I assembled these visualisations using data from the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Small Business Administration, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and The Cook Political Report.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this. What would you like to see analysed and visualised next?
